Koalas are one of Australia’s most beloved animals, but there’s more to these cuddly-looking marsupials than meets the eye! Here are five fascinating facts about koalas that will make you love them even more.
1. Koalas Sleep Up to 20 Hours a Day!
Koalas are expert snoozers! Because their diet consists mainly of eucalyptus leaves, which are low in nutrients and take a long time to digest, koalas conserve their energy by sleeping up to 20 hours a day. That’s almost an entire day spent snoozing in the treetops!
2. They Have Fingerprints – Just Like Humans!
Did you know that koalas have fingerprints that are almost identical to humans? In fact, their prints are so similar that even forensic experts have a hard time telling them apart from ours. This unique feature helps them grip branches securely as they climb.
3. Baby Koalas Are Tiny and Hairless
Koala babies, called joeys, are born the size of a jellybean! When they’re born, they are blind, hairless, and completely dependent on their mother. They crawl into their mother’s pouch, where they continue to grow and develop for about six months before emerging.
4. Koalas Smell Like Eucalyptus
Thanks to their eucalyptus diet, koalas naturally smell like fresh eucalyptus leaves. This scent helps keep insects away and also makes them smell quite pleasant to humans. However, male koalas have a special scent gland on their chest that they use to mark their territory with a stronger, muskier smell.
5. They Have a Built-In Cushion for Sitting
Koalas spend most of their lives perched in trees, so nature gave them a special cartilage pad on their backside that acts like a built-in cushion. This allows them to sit comfortably on rough branches for hours without discomfort!
