Kangaroos are one of Australia’s most famous animals, and for good reason! These incredible marsupials are built for adventure, with powerful legs, unique pouches, and a fascinating way of life. Here are some amazing facts that make kangaroos truly special!

1. They Are the Ultimate Jumping Champions!

Kangaroos are built for speed and power! They can leap up to 9 metres in a single bound and travel at speeds of over 60 km/h. Their strong hind legs help them cover huge distances while using less energy than running.

2. They Can’t Walk Backwards!

Unlike most animals, kangaroos can’t walk backward. Their muscular tail and large feet make stepping backward nearly impossible. This unique trait is why kangaroos appear on the Australian coat of arms—symbolising a nation always moving forward!

3. Joeys Are the Size of a Jellybean!

When baby kangaroos (called joeys) are born, they’re only about 2cm long—the size of a jellybean! The tiny, hairless joey must crawl into its mother’s pouch, where it continues to grow for several months before peeking out to explore the world.

4. They Can Have Three Babies at Once!

Kangaroo mothers can do something amazing—they can be pregnant with three joeys at different stages! One baby stays in the pouch, another drinks milk outside the pouch, and the mother can still be carrying a fertilised embryo, waiting for the right time to grow. This superpower is called embryonic diapause.

5. They Are Built for the Outback!

Kangaroos can survive in some of the driest parts of Australia. They don’t sweat like humans; instead, they lick their arms to cool down! They also need very little water and can go months without drinking by getting moisture from their food.

Bonus Fact: Kangaroos Are Social Creatures!

Kangaroos live in groups called mobs, usually led by a dominant male. They communicate with grunts, clicks, and even foot stomps to warn of danger. Mobs help protect each other from predators like dingoes and eagles.

Kangaroos are are strong, smart, and essential to the ecosystem.
